Smart Home App
This app was my graduation project. The project is centered around developing a smart home app that goes beyond mere remote control, effectively showcasing the full potential of home automation.

Research
Online research
In order to set goals for the project I have done online research. I have compared different platforms and looked up various case studies.
The home screen displays the most relevant information for the current time of the day.
Apple HomeKit
It has a simple design that indicates what the user can do with the app.
Apple HomeKit
Efficient home screen design. Everything happens with a click.
Amazon Alexa
user research
I conducted interviews with users who own smart devices and use smart home apps to better understand their frustrations and their needs.

About
Owns 2 smart device and uses them 2-3 times a week.
Owns a smart vacuum cleaner and smart rice cooker. She often uses the vacuum app but doesn't use the rice cooker's app because it's no different than just using the device's buttons. Took her some time to learn how to navigate the vacuum app and to find how to set up automations.
Frustration
- Manual actions are too complicated to set up by myself.
- Finds the navigation confusing at times.
Goals
- Assign actions more quickly and easily.
- Have an easier navigation experience through the app.
Key points
The main use of smart apps is convenience.
Smart apps are efficient and therefore make time for other chores.
Some smart apps adapt to the user's personal lifestyle.

Ideation

A true smart home app is an app that works for the user and isn't just another remote control app.

Knows The User
Relevant information that’s adapted to the user’s lifestyle & surroundings.
Works For The User
Learns the user’s schedule and offers relevant devices and automations.
Efficient & Easy
Relevant information on the homepage and easy navigation.

Final design
The following section will explain and highlight the fundamental points of the app and go through the general flow.

Personal Approach
Smart Automations
The automations will be affected by factors like the weather, the number of members in the house, and the time of day.
Learns The User
The app slowly learns the user's daily routine and offers relevant automations. The automations are still editable to make the user feel in control.
Relevant Suggestions
The app offers relevant devices that are used at a certain time of the day, that are not necessarily included in the automation.
No active automation?
no worries.
The user won't be left without any relevant information. Instead, the current active devices will display.
Two screenshots showing active now devices that would appear instead of an automation if there isn't one. Below that, on the left showing the tab of items by relevancy and on the right showing items by room.
screenshot showing the scheduled automations
Scheduled Automations
These automations are set by the user to start at a certain time or as a response to a certain event. Like, when if the temperature inside of the house is over a certain degree turn on the AC.
Manual automation
The user can set manual automations for specific situations that don’t happen often like a movie night.

Recommendations
The app learns the user's actions and will recommend new automations according to their frequent activities.
Three screenshots. The top one showing the devices panel categorized by device type (all devices). The screenshot on the right shows the same panel but categorized by a by room tab.
The last screenshot shows how a category type looks like, for example all lights.
